About Me

Paul Bohman
Here I am with my Yashica Mat-124 G twin reflex camera that once belonged to my grandfather, who was also a photographer. This isn't my main camera, but when I'm in the mood to take pictures with film, this is a fun medium format camera to have on hand.

I am a fine art, portrait, commercial, and editorial photographer based in Washington DC and available for travel anywhere in the world on assignment. Contact me and let's talk about your artistic vision.

Why photography? Well, I started out as an artist. I created drawings and paintings, mostly, but also dabbled in sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and other media. I still love all of those, but these days, photography occupies more of my creative energy. Photography requires a combination of artistic vision and technical skill. I love envisioning artistic possibilities just as much as I love learning the intricacies of photography gear, and believe me, it can get quite intricate, especially when you get into studio lighting and set creation. Photography is so much more than pressing the shutter and looking at the back of an LCD screen to see what happened. In fact, I've really enjoyed my recent foray into film photography. With film, you have to get it right as you take the shot, and you won't know for sure what it looks like until after you develop the negatives and either make a print or scan the file into the computer.

When I'm not working as a photographer, I spend time trying to finish my doctorate in education (curriculum and instruction), or swing dancing to big-band and classic jazz music, riding my bike, jogging, working on my web sites, playing the piano, or sleeping in (when I get the chance).

So that's me in a nutshell. Contact me about your photographic and artistic needs and you'll get to know me better!

My gear

One of my all-time favorite portrait cameras is the Mamiya RZ67 medium format camera, which I have used with both film and a digital back. It produces razor sharp images with very pleasing bokeh (in other words, any parts of the image that don't happen to be in focus look lusciously creamy and pleasing). Another medium format camera I have worked with is the Hasselblad H3D-39, which is an excellent high resolution digital or film camera. In the 35mm world, I use Nikon cameras (currently either the Nikon D3x or Nikon D7000), typically digital, but sometimes film as well, with my Nikon F100. I also have a large format 4x5" view camera that I pull out from time to time. There's nothing quite like looking at those huge negatives and seeing all the detail they can capture. Plus, with a view camera, I have access to the full set of camera movements: tilt, shift, swing, rise, and fall. Now that's a real camera!

I also own a full set of studio lighting equipment, light modifiers, and other gear to make a professional photography sessions possible. I'm set and ready to go.
